The Garden and Estate

With its fine garden, 16 acres of fields and woodland and a private shoreline, Sunny Bank Farm offers the ideal place to relax and unwind.

The Garden

The garden is beautifully planted for all seasons. The Sunny Bank name is given for good reason as the lawn slopes South from beside the house.  It is a haven for bird life (especially if you fill the bird feeders) and bats can be seen at dusk followed by the hoot of an owl.  Sheep normally graze in the adjoining fields and they often peer into an upper window in the kitchen.  In spring, the lambs are an extra attraction.  The skies are very dark and a stroll outside on a clear night is well rewarded if you like star gazing.

A barbecue area and plenty of seating make this the place to eat in good weather.

An old piggery is great for children to make a den in.

There is off-road parking for 4-5 cars by the house and further parking just inside the field entrance should you need it.

The Lake

Sunny Bank Farm occupies a stunning location on the quiet western shore of Coniston Water. Our 400 metres of lake shore has a gentle stony slope from which you can launch your own boat or hire our rowing boat and Canadian canoe.  The lake is at its best in the early morning and late afternoon on calm days when the surface often becomes mirror-like.

Across the lake from Sunny Bank Farm are the wooded slopes of Grizedale Forest.

The National Trust Peel Island otherwise known as Wild Cat Island, of Swallows and Amazons fame, is a 15 minute row or paddle away. It's a great place to explore with secret harbours, trees to climb, wild honeysuckle and rocks where you can stretch out and sunbathe on a warm day. On cooler days, take a thermos and enjoy a hot drink while you're there.

Boats

Our rowing boat and Canadian canoe are available to rent for the duration of your stay. Taking 3-4 people each they will open up a new dimension to your holiday, providing hours of fun. You will be able to explore the banks of Coniston Water, cross over to the far shore and land on Peel Island – great for games of hide-and-seek! The boats are stored down at the water’s edge and can be easily launched into shallow water from the stony beach. Oars, paddles and buoyancy aids in a variety of sizes are all provided. Please note that no training can be given and guests hiring the boats are expected to be fully competent on the water.

If you bring your own boat, it is possible to drive across the fields to the lake shore unless it has been very wet.

Lake jetty and ferry

The ferry stops at the jetty on Torver Common in Summer just beyond the boundary of Sunny Bank Farm
